About
Welcome to Scholars Bar, a noteworthy gem nestled in the heart of Scarborough at 6 Somerset Terrace, YO11 2PA. This establishment breaks the mold of typical town center bars, promising a unique experience for both locals and visitors alike. If you're in search of a lively atmosphere paired with quality beverages, look no further than this football-themed pub.
One of the standout features of Scholars Bar is its impressive selection of cask ales. Patrons like Paul Dunn rave about the variety available, often highlighting the meticulous care the landlord takes in maintaining these brews. For those who prefer something different, the bar also serves a notable range of ciders and, as Roy Bloom discovered, even gluten-free options, including a rich porter. There’s something here for everyone, regardless of dietary needs.
The ambiance is welcoming and warm, as mentioned by customer JA C, who appreciated the clean and tidy space, perfect for an afternoon retreat. It’s also a dog-friendly establishment, making it a perfect pit stop for dog owners like Martin Storey, whose furry friend was catered to by the attentive staff.
Pricing is fair, too; as Abi noted, a cider and a pint of Moretti were reasonably priced at just over £8. The fantastic background music adds to the overall vibe, creating a memorable experience for all who visit.
With its thoughtful details, such as having the pub name elegantly displayed on beer mats and glasses, Scholars Bar has garnered a loyal following, underscored by accolades like winning the Town Pub of the Year 2024. Whether you’re a Scarborough local or just passing through, Scholars Bar is a must-visit destination that promises good vibes, great company, and even better drinks.
“ An interesting football themed pub, good vibe but better still were the 3 gluten free beers (one a porter) on tap at the bar. I am not local but if IU was I would go again. ”
“ This is not your typical Scarborough town centre bar, we tried them, then thankfully we found Scholar's Bar where we returned to the following afternoon on our final days holiday. It is a shame that we didn't discover it earlier. This welcoming dog friendly clean and tidy establishment is impeccably run by a most venerable fellow who keeps a good selection of well kept cask ales and I am told that the sauvignon blanc was good also. Fantastic background music. Highly recommended. ”
“ Nice pub, was very busy when we came but still managed to find a seat. It cost me just over 8 for a cider and a pint of moretti so reasonable pricing too, would come back ”
“ My dog took exception to the horse racing that was on. The bar staff were so good! I didn't ask them to turn it off, but they did and even brought him treats. Will go again with my dog when they're not showing horse racing! ”
“ Visiting Scarborough for the weekend we headed for this pub after reading the reviews on here. And it was well worth the walk from our B&B. Never been in a pub with such a fantastic selection of cask ales! My wife loved the ciders on offer too. The attention to detail with the pub name on beer mats and glasses ect was amazing. Great atmosphere and friendly locals. Nice and clean. The landlord takes great pride in this establishment and certainly knows how to look after the beers on offer. Also has won the town pub of the year 2024. Recommended. ”
“ Scholars Bar is a traditional pub with a good selection of beers, lager and cider including nine hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The cask ales we tried were in excellent condition. There are no bar games, but the pub has tv screens for watching Sport. The staff are welcoming and the pub is dog friendly. The pub has won the Camra award for Best Pub in Scarborough for the last two years. It is a great pub worth visiting. ”
“ Last week my wife Theresa and I went on a mini break in Scarborough and being a fan of real cask ale googled to see what was available. Found two pubs and didn't need to look further. The closest to our hotel Scholar's was the stand out of the two. It is a sports bar with loads of tv screens but with no volume, just background music. The choice of perfectly kept beers was wonderful and the owner Danny made us feel so welcome. Both he and all the bar staff were so friendly and after a couple of days we were on first name terms. On our last day a Thursday we were advised that being quiz night there would be no seating room because all tables were reserved for the quiz. Although it was busy the atmosphere was amazing and we were thoroughly entertained watching the quiz and the rugby league Danny put on after I requested it earlier in the afternoon. We were also brought seats by regulars doing the quiz. It was quite sad on Thursday that it was our last night. If you go anywhere in Scarborough for a few drinks in pleasant surroundings you must go here. Hopefully we will return, Thanks Danny for your hospitality, you made our week. John and Theresa. ”
“ This place has the widest selection of beers I've ever seen in a pub. The landlord was extremely helpful and friendly, we really enjoyed chatting with him. Although it was our first visit we were welcomed as if we were regulars. The only drawback for us....... We live so far away! Highly recommend a visit here. Thanks ”
